Below is a small list of commonly asked questions. If you have a question that is not answered here, please email us at GulfCoastDachshundRescue@yahoo.com

Q- Are dachshunds good with children?

A- That totally depends on the personality of both the dachshund and the child. It is extremely important to make a good match where children are involved. The foster home will provide potential owners with information about their foster that will help make a perfect match. Remember- the foster home really knows their foster, so if they have concerns about placing a dachshund in a home with children, there is a good reason.

Q- Do you adopt out of state?

A- We are concerned with finding the perfect home for each dog. Whether that's just across the street or half way across the country, we do all we can to get him or her home.

Q- What requirements do you have to adopt?

A- First, we do not adopt to homes that have unaltered dogs or cats, unless the dog or cat is actively persuing their conformation title through AKC or CFA, or if the dog or cat has a medical reason as to why he or she can not be altered. There is no room for negotiation here. We are involved in trying to curb the over-population problem, not contribute to it. Secondly, an application is required. We use the applications to get to know the potential home better by contacting references. These references include three personal references and one vet reference. If you decide to fill out an application, please be sure to contact your vet to alert them that we will be calling and asking about vaccinations, heart-worm preventative and spay/neuter status.
We also require a homevisit . We use this tool much in the same way as the application. All rescues require this step. We want to be certain that the next home each dog goes to is the last.

The adoption process is completed with a contract that protects the adopted dachshund and ensures that he or she will be cared for as a member of the family and will be returned to GCDR in the event the new home can no longer care for him or her.
In addition to these steps, most of our fosters require a fenced yard. In some cases, older and more sedate dachshunds can be adopted to a home without a fenced yard, and we also consider making acceptions to families that live in apartments. Typically the decision is a case-by-case situation.

Q- I have never owned a dachshund. Can I still adopt?

A- Most definately. One Goal that GCDR has is to educate potential adopters about the breed. You will be mentoured by a GCDR member throughout the adoption process and any and all questions will be answered.

Q- Where do your fosters come from?

A- Our fosters come from all walks of life. Many come from "kill-shelters" where they were abandoned by their owners. Some come from owner surrenders for various reasons, and some are found in the street or tossed away like yesterday's trash. Most of these dogs have faced unthinkable circumstances, but still have a heart full of love and trust. It's truly amazing.

Q- I want to foster. What requirements do you have?

A- Our requirements for our foster homes are the same as they are for adopters. We are *always* in need of foster homes who can commit to these special dogs. We need foster homes who are willing to share their heart and their home until that special forever home is found. Our foster homes understand that it may take 8 weeks or 8 months until that perfect home is found. They also understand that yes, it's hard at first to let your foster go to a new home, but that there is *
ALWAYS* another waiting in the wings who needs as much or even more care than the last. If you would like to foster, please email us at GulfCoastDachshundRescue@yahoo.com for more information.
